Let us all for forget about politics, strategies, sentiments for a while and discuss the real facts about the telangana issue........
First let us discuss the history:
During the Mughal empire in early 18th Century Asafjahi dynasty established a seperate state known as Hyderabad. Later Hyderabad entered alliance with the British Empire, and was the largest and most populous princely state in India. Telangana was never under direct British rule, unlike Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh, which were part of British India's Madras Presidency.
After India become independent in 1947 Nizam of Hyderabad wanted it to be seperate from rest of the India but the then Indian govt with the help of India Army took it over from the Nizam rule in Sepetember 1948....
Telugu-speaking people were distributed in about 22 districts; 9 of them in the Telangana region of Nizam's Dominions (Hyderabad State), 12 in the Madras Presidency and one in French-controlled Yanam.
In an effort to unify the Telugu people, and preserve the unique culture of Telugu people, Potti Sri Ramulu started fasting for attaining statehood for Andhra in Madras on 19 October 1952. The government of the day however did not make a clear statement about the formation of a new state despite several strikes and demonstrations by Telugu people. On the midnight of 15 December (i.e. early 16 December 1952), Potti Sreeramulu died and laid down his life trying to achieve his objective.
In his death procession, people shouted slogans praising his sacrifice. When the procession reached Mount Road, thousands of people joined and raised slogans hailing Sriramulu. Later, they went into a frenzy and resorted to destruction of public property. The news spread like wildfire and created an uproar among the people in far off places like Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Guntur, Tenali, Ongole and Nellore. Seven people were killed in police firing in Anakapalle and Vijayawada. The popular agitation continued for three to four days disrupting normal life in Madras and Andhra regions. On 19 December, the Prime minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru made an announcement about formation of a separate state.
On 1 October 1953, the state of Andhra was established with Kurnool as capital carving it out from Madras State. However, the Telangana region existed prior as a separate state before merging with Andhra state. On November 1, 1956, Telangana was merged with Andhra and as a result Andhra Pradesh was formed with Hyderabad as its capital, against the States Reorganization Commission Report (SRC). Kerala and Karnataka states were formed the same day in 1956, followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960. The formation of linguistic states is the single most important event in the history of South Indian languages, as it provided an opportunity for these languages to develop independently, each of them having a state to support.
After 13 years starts a movement to seperate Andhra Pradesh again
In 1969 Jai Telangana Movement started People in Telangana region were not happy with the 1956 agreement as the Government did not implement what was promised. Students in Osmania University started this movement and this caused violence and deaths of hundreds of people in Telangana region. The sacrifices of these people were wasted as the cruel politics of Congress lured many separatists to their party and the movement was all dampened.
Today:
After 1969 not many complains from the people of the region but when even a new party wants to come to power they bring up the topic of Seperate Telangana State to win elections starting..In 1990’s BJP promised a separate state if they come to power but could not as TDP was opposing it..
In 2004 Congress promised a separate state if they come to power and merged with parties in Telangana regions to win elections.
In 2009 another politician (I would not refer him to be a leader) came up with a fasting stunt all of a sudden which led violence, uncertainity among ppl... Students committed sucide, destroyed public property, Bandhs, break to normal life...... Now everyone in his party refers himself as another Potti Sriramulu .... Do we have any comparison?? How can some one with such a bad health condition survive without anything for 11 days.... Is this a movie??
Isn’t it a fact that every part of the state needs resources for its own development. As most parts of Andhra have good lands they generate more money and this can be shared if not equally. There are no big movements after 1969 unless the political parties bring it up
Aside from the Facts there are the questions that need to answered:
1. Yes, Telangana was not being developed in 1969. Does that fact still apply after 40 years in 2009?
2. Isn’t Hyderabad the 5th largest city in the country and is in Telangana region?
3. Where will the Telangana get money for its development (Still from Alcohol Taxes) or Will it be only from Hyderabad?
4. Is it just the small parties in Telangana region that want recognition by getting a new state?
5. Was the decision made by the government in 1956 based on Telugu speaking people instead of development a right one?
6. Is it just that people who want identity bring this up so that they could get one?
7. Will Telugu Thalli be split into half?
8. Why is this issue so low during NTR’s period?
I wish the politicians or the political parties take right decisions based on the real fact that could develop the Telangana region and give an advantage to the people living there instead of playing games to get power. If Mani Ratnam is from Telugu he would have made a great movie by now (Just a thought) Remember it all stated with The Nizam Of Hyderabad in 1947 and after 60 years it still continues…
In my opinion decision taken by the Indian govt to make states on Linguistic basis is totally correct and all of us have to be united.... but I do not want to hurt anyone's sentiments with this blog and is purely my opinion.... I wld stand by it Jai Andhra Pradesh....
Note: Data has been collected from various articles and few are my own opinions..... It may have little discrepancies from the real facts unintentionally. Corrections are always welcome. This article tried to be neutral as an issue always has two stories.
